EB1 regulates attachment of Ska1 with microtubules by forming extended structures on the microtubule lattice

Chromosomal misaggregation and instability can lead to many diseases and disorders including cancer, miscarriage and congenital disorder. During cell division, correct association between spindles and chromosomes is mediated by the kinetochore, a protein complex that assembles on the centromeric chromatin. Understanding the molecular mechanism of kinetochore-microtubule attachment is essential for prevention of chromosomal misaggregation.

In this work by Thomas et al, a group of scientists from IISER-Thiruvananthapuram, Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science-Kolkata, and IIT-Delhi have investigated the molecular details of kinetochore-microtubule attachment in vertebrates, which could elucidate key features of chromosomal segregation during cell division.
