The Quality Improvement Program (QIP) was launched by the Government of India in the year 1970 with an objective to upgrade the expertise and capabilities of the faculty members of the degree-level engineering institutions in the country. The Program is now being implemented and monitored by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE - A Statutory Body of the Government of India). |
The following three main activities are being undertaken under the QIP serving the faculty of degree-level engineering institutions and the faculty member of TTTIs of India:
|
The seven QIP Centres (at the 7 IITs and IISc) undertake the various activities listed above. Admissions to Master's and /or Ph.D. programs are also undertaken in selected areas in additional 18 recognised institutions. A large number of faculty members from AICTE- recognised engineering institutions from all over the country have pursued Master's and Ph. D. degree programs. These are aimed at improving the standard and quality of technical education through improvement of the qualifications of the faculty members in the various engineering institutions. |
A number of short-term courses have also been organised by the QIP Centres for the benefit of the faculty members from engineering colleges. The courses have proved very popular and useful. |
Since the inception of the QIP Scheme, Curriculum Development Cells have been set up for improving the effectiveness of technical education in the country by undertaking activities which include curriculum development and revision or preparation of monographs, text books, teacher's manuals, teaching aids and other resource materials, examination reforms, organizing inter-institutional programs, seminars, workshops and panel discussions, development of educational technology, creation of methodologies for formal and informal training, technical education of the handicapped and other activities. |
