Schlumberger signs MoU with IIT Delhi to set up Center of Excellence

Schlumberger and IIT Delhi have announced the setting up of a Center of Excellence for Oil and Gas Technology at IIT Delhi. The Center of Excellence will house latest software technology provided by Schlumberger will enable students at the premier institute to work with modern technological tools used in the industry.

Schlumberger is the world's leading oilfield services company supplying technology, information solutions and integrated project management that optimize reservoir performance for customers working in the oil and gas industry. The company employs more than 95,000 people of over 140 nationalities working in approximately 85 countries.

Emphasizing on the importance of latest technology in education, IIT Delhi director Prof. V Ramgopal Rao said that setting up of the center would give the faculty and students a unique access in contributing to the development of indigenous technology for O&G in India. “This CoE will act as a nucleus for galvanizing research between IIT Delhi, and various stake holders of Indian Oil and Gas industry to jointly execute research and development to provide innovative solutions for an energy-sufficient future for the global citizens”.

India is world’s third largest consumer of crude oil and petroleum products in the world with 635 million metric tonnes (MMT) of proven oil reserves and 54 trillion cubic feet of proven natural gas reserves. Even then, about 81% of India’s domestic oil consumption is imported. With renewed governmental focus on decreasing the import bill by 2022, setting up strategic centers like this in premier universities like IIT Delhi, will give a big boost to more advance research work in the area of exploration and development of Oil and Gas reservoirs in the country.

Sujit Kumar, GM Schlumberger South Asia said that the Oil and Gas industry had vast application for domains other than just Geosciences.” Almost all streams of engineering including Computer science, Data Sciences, Electrical, Chemical, Mechanical, civil, find applications in the Oil & Gas Industry. This CoE would serve as a platform for a multi-dimensional collaboration that would not only bring out unique work but also foster skill creation for the Indian Industries.”

Prof. B R Mehta, Dean of R&D for IIT Delhi and Schlumberger Chair professor, said “The upstream O&G industry utilizes technology from all domains extensively. With strong research expertise in different areas of chemical and computer science and engineering, IIT Delhi can significantly contribute towards the development of this area and setting up this CoE will have a large impact on our efforts towards development of indigenous technologies”
