Startup@IITD: A Technology for Next Generation of Automobiles

Vecmocon technologies Pvt. Ltd is a startup incubated and mentored by IIT Delhi, working on the technology for next generation of automobiles. The startup is in the business of core components design and automotive big analytics and services for electric smart-vehicles. As of now the startup is working with three Electric Vehicle-OEMs. Okinawa Auto-tech, Lohia Auto industries and Hero Electric. In an interview with Vanita Srivastava, the CEO of the company Peeyush Asati talks about his company, the challenges and the future roadmap.




How and when did you get the idea for the startup?

 

We (co-founders) were always passionate about clean technology and electric smart vehicles. Working with formula student team projects some of us got the exposure to build and design vehicles from the drawing board. Further interacting with the industry, we identified the core pain points and challenges and we set to work on it. More importantly we believe that we are on the brink of a change in the automobile industry, there is going to be a very rapid electrification of powertrain. The physics of drive will change and the whole behavior of our automobiles is going to change as well. They are going to be intelligent. Our vehicles will communicate, would self-learn, not just would self-learn but learn from their whole fleet of siblings, would self-heal in some cases, would predict and prevent maintenance. They adapt to user behavior, will be far safer, energy efficient and data driven. We envisaged this future for our vehicles and set to work on it. We want to be one of the important drivers of this revolution.

 

What does your startup deal with?

 

We are a startup working on electric smart vehicles. We design core electric vehicle subsystems, motor controllers, battery management systems and vehicle communication and integration modules. These subsystems essentially form the central nervous system of the vehicle. These subsystems have embedded sensors, memory and computers to generate, store and process the data and send it to our servers. We work with the data of “Each use of every user”, which takes us into the domain of automotive big data analytics, also enabling us to derive key insights on user driving behavior, terrain, road conditions and establishing co-relations and causality with vehicle dynamics and other subsystems performance. Moving further we employ modern methods of Machine Learning to imbibe intelligence on our vehicles.

 

Can you please elaborate on the need of such a startup?

 

We are on the brink of a change in the automobile industry. There is going to be a very rapid electrification of power-train. The physics of drive will change and the whole behavior of our automobiles are going to change as well. They are going to be intelligent. Our vehicles will communicate, would self-learn, not just would self-learn but learn from their whole fleet of siblings, would self-heal in some cases, would predict and prevent maintenance. They adapt to user behavior, will be far safer, energy efficient & data driven. We envisage this future for our vehicles, thus we set to work on it. Automobiles will generate data about how they are used, where they are used, who’s using them. With power-train electrification, commute as a service, vehicle autonomy and connectivity, the amount of data from vehicles will grow exponentially. This data is extremely valuable.

 

So how are we doing it?

 

We are a B2B enterprise where we work closely with OEMs in design of the core components of electric vehicles. We essentially build the central nervous system of electric vehicles. We fully design all the control components of electric vehicles i.e. motor controllers, battery management systems and vehicle control and communication module. These control components also have embedded sensors, computers and communication system to send us the data we require. The vehicle communication and control module also provides cloud connectivity enabling smart services.

 

What are the main challenges that you encountered?

 

Some of the main challenges that we encountered and are currently encountering, is to sustain in the initial years, because the industry we work with requires very high degree of robustness and reliability. It takes considerable amount of time to move from TRL (Technology Readiness Levels), TRL-0 to TRL-10. Also because the domain we work on is capital intensive and building even few prototypes requires considerable sums of money. Another challenge is to build the right team, because electric vehicle industry is still in the nascent stage, there are really few professionals in the industry to interact with and learn from. But these are the challenges that also drives us and help us grow. To be able to work under constraints is what is expected of a Startup.

 

What is the future roadmap of your startup?

 

We aspire to be one of prominent e-automotive data analytics and e-smart vehicle infrastructure Services Company in India in next 5 years. We shall always continue to work on cutting edge technologies and continue to find its applications in automotive industry.
