Incentives at IITD

IIT Delhi motivates faculty members to continually challenge themselves to achieve higher productivity. Various incentives recognize and reward extraordinary performance. See the summary of incentives here.

Young Faculty Incentive Fellowship ‘YFIF’

IIT Delhi supports and encourages young academicians from the very beginning of their career. The Young Faculty Incentive Fellowship (YFIF) Scheme (which is sponsored by alumni or industry) incentivizes young faculty members by providing an honorarium of ₹25,000 per month. Faculty members in their first three years from the date of joining who are not yet at the pay level 13A1are eligible.

Selection Process-

YFIF is granted to Assistant Professors based on the recommendation of the Selection Committee. See notification on YFIF regarding its duration. See notification on the honorarium of YFIF.

Faculty Research Travel Awards (FRTA)

Faculty Research Travel Awards (FRTA) provide faculty members with financial assistance to attend conferences, seminars, workshops, courses, trainings etc. across the globe. This can also be used to extend a trip to visit universities, centres of excellence, industry. alumni events, and other activities that may be beneficial to the faculty member or the institute. FRTA can cover travel, boarding and lodging, DA, Registration, Visa, Health insurance and other related expenses.

Faculty Research Awards

‘Faculty Research Awards’ promotes and rewards excellence and achievement in Research and Development in the fields of Science, Management, Humanities and Social Sciences. These awards have prize money and are conferred annually.

Applying for FRA-

A link is made available on the website of IIT Delhi when the ‘call to apply’ for the awards gets announced. The description of each award along with the eligibility criteria for the faculty is also shared.

Some important points regarding faculty research awards:

i. The applications for these awards are invited for a specific year and are valid for that year only.

ii. Any faculty will be considered for only one award at a time and can receive at most one award in each category in their tenure in IIT Delhi. However, one may apply for more than one of these awards if one fulfils the criteria.

iii. Every application will be screened by a special committee constituted by the Director of the Institute before being forwarded to an external committee comprising eminent experts for the final selection of awardees. The awards in any category may be shared by multiple faculty members at the discretion of the external committee.

Chair Position at IIT Delhi

Chair positions at IIT Delhi are conferred to the faculty with outstanding research contributions. The objective of granting Chair position is to promote excellence and leadership in teaching, research and development in academic fields, and to facilitate broader interaction between the industry and academia.

External Chairs have been established with donations from alumni and well-wishers of the institute. In addition, IIT Delhi has also created Institute Chairs which are funded directly by the institute.

Eligibility: Each Chair position has a different target and eligibility. In general, all require demonstrated excellence in research and teaching. In case the MoU that establishes a Chair explicitly identifies a discipline, research area, or an expertise, only those who possess the requisite expertise stated in the MoU would be eligible. Experts outside IIT Delhi may also be appointed to Chair position in conjunction with their appointment to a position at IIT Delhi (including Regular/Visiting/Emeritus faculty positions).

Duration of Chair: The appointment against the Chair is nominally made for a period of three years, extendible to five years. However, it cannot extend beyond the faculty member’s term of employment at the institute.

The continuation into the fourth and fifth years will be subject to a review at the end of the third year. Further, an individual may be eligible to be considered for re-appointment for a period of up to 5 years (without a break) any number of times.

Research grant: The faculty member appointed as Chair receive a research grant of INR 5 Lakhs each year. Out of this total, they may opt to receive up to ₹25000 as a monthly honorarium.

The research grant is managed through IRD’s PDF project and may be used for any academic purpose. Examples include paying the salary of research students and staff, supporting domestic or international travel (of self, students, collaborators, etc.), expenses for specialized training in India or abroad, procuring equipment, supplies and books, etc.

Apply for Chair: Interested faculty members may apply for chair position by logging into the online portal on the website of IIT Delhi. Candidates can apply for multiple chair positions if they fulfil the eligibility of the those positions. No one may hold more than one chair position at a time, irrespective of whether it is an externally funded chair or an institute chair. Barring the Institute chair, all other externally funded Chair positions have only one vacancy each.

Selection Process: A single Standing Selection Committee consisting of eminent people representing all major disciplines meet normally twice in a year and consider the cases of appointment of all Chair Professors in the Institute. Higher Administrative Grade (HAG)

Experienced professors (with at least six years of service at the Professor level) are eligible for the `Higher Administrative Grade,’ or HAG. HAG appointment rules are as per the government of India guidelines, and it provides for a higher salary. See the guidelines regarding HAG.
